Deportation delayed by ferry fare dispute
KOTA KINABALU: A dispute over ferry fares has delayed the deportation of hundreds of Filipino illegal immigrants being held at the temporary detention centre in Sandakan.Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said he had directed State Secretary Datuk Sukarti Wakiman to resolve the situation, said to have arisen from differences over ferry fares from Sandakan to the southern Philippines city of Zamboanga.
Quoting unnamed officials, a local newspaper here reported a dispute between a company contracted to arrange the transportation of the illegal immigrants and the shipping agent representing the Zamboanga-based ferry service company.
The company wanted to pay RM120 for each illegal immigrant, while the shipping agent quoted RM155.
The normal one-way fare for the twice-a-week ferry service between Sandakan and Zamboanga City is RM280.
It is understood that some 500 Filipino illegal immigrants had been provided travel documents to return to their home country but only a single batch of 138 were deported on Tuesday in the first two weeks of the month.
Yesterday, Musa said money should not be an issue as the Government had allocated RM50mil for the statewide Ops Bersepadu crackdown against illegal immigrants.
“The money is there.
“We have to see what the problem is and get it resolved,” he said after witnessing the signing of the establishment of the Malua Wildlife Habitat Conservation Bank here yesterday.
